When Baby Won’t Sleep: Embracing Wakeful Moments in the Studio

As a newborn photographer, I’ve learned that every session is beautifully unique—just like the babies I photograph. While many little ones sleep soundly through their session, there are times when a baby just isn’t interested in drifting off. This is especially common with older newborns, who are starting to take in more of the world around them.

And you know what? That’s okay!

The Beauty of Awake Newborn Sessions

When a baby decides that today is the day to stay awake, we get the gift of personality-filled portraits. Wide-eyed wonder, delicate little smirks, furrowed brows of concentration—these are the moments that show off a baby’s emerging personality in the most natural way. Sometimes, we even get those fleeting, heart-melting eye contact moments that parents cherish forever.

As a newborn photographer, I’ve learned that every session is beautifully unique—just like the babies I photograph. While many little ones sleep soundly through their session, there are times when a baby just isn’t interested in drifting off. This is especially common with older newborns, who are starting to take in more of the world around them.

Rather than forcing sleep, I adjust my approach:

• Keeping Baby Comfortable – A warm studio, soft wraps, and gentle movements all help baby feel secure, even if sleep isn’t on the agenda.
• Soothing Techniques – Rocking, gentle shushing, or offering a feeding break can encourage relaxation.
• Adapting Poses – If baby is alert, I shift to more naturally awake poses—capturing their tiny hands exploring, their bright eyes looking up at mom, or the adorable way they stretch.
• Patience and Flow – Sometimes, a baby will doze off after a period of awake time, so we allow the session to unfold at their pace.

The Magic of Every Moment

A wakeful baby might not be what parents expect, but it often results in some of the most expressive and memorable images. Those bright, curious eyes and tiny, thoughtful expressions tell their own story—one of a little life just beginning to explore the world.

So, whether a baby sleeps peacefully or stays wide-eyed through their session, the magic is always there. My job is to create beautiful, timeless images—no matter what kind of mood baby is in.
